The Congregational Institute for Practical Theology

The Congregational Institute for Practical Theology is a key part of the Congregational Federation. We deliver a Foundation Degree in Practical Theology, which is validated by York St John University, as well as a series of local and national courses which help to equip local churches and individuals for service within church settings and beyond. All of our courses are taught with a non-conformist Congregational perspective.

As of June 2026, we are an ecumenical Christian chaplaincy team serving the University of Leeds, Leeds Arts University and the University of Law in Leeds. Our core work involves:

  • Pastoral Care (including Personal Support, Crisis and Bereavement care and dedicated International students support),

  • Spirituality (through Inter-faith work to increase understanding between people of different faiths, Worship and other religious events and Spiritual development) and well as

University of Wales, St David’s

The University Certificate, worth 40 Level 7 credits, recognises the importance and complexity of the chaplaincy role and further professionalises it. On successful completion of the UWTSD University Certificate in Professional Chaplaincy (Policing), there is an opportunity for Chaplains to ‘top-up’ this award by studying a further 20 credit module to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate in Chaplaincy. Subsequently, the credits achieved can be used to top-up to a Postgraduate Diploma or an MA in Chaplaincy.

Wesley House, Cambridge

The Certificate is a Master’s level award and has been created for part-time distance learners. It comprises two modules, including a Pastoral Placement. Each module has 20 teaching hours and is assessed through 6,000-word assignments.
