POP-UP REFLECTIVE PRACTICE
As part of our support for chaplains, and as a gift to the wider profession, the FCG organises monthly reflective practice sessions. The UKBHC Spiritual Care Competences for Healthcare Chaplains (2020) document recognises reflective practice as one of four domains of healthcare chaplaincy competence and within their CPD chaplains are expected to demonstrate the ability to reflect upon practice to develop and inform their professional practice. Reflective practice, as described by Mark Stobert, is a form of supervision that is underpinned by a reflective practice mindset. It uses the potential of ‘reframing’ situations to unearth creative responses to those situations and to develop new knowledge of practice for those situations. Over time it becomes a developing state of mind so that we can reflect in action, not just on action. These ‘pop up’ sessions are open to anyone to attend, though particularly put on with lone chaplains or small teams in mind where reflecting together as a team is difficult. The sessions use different methods and techniques depending on who is facilitating. Some are led by Mark Stobart, shaped by his framework outlined here, some by Bob Whorton making use of creative methods of reflection and some by Kate Cornwell using concepts from Deep Talk.
The UKBHC has approved 1 CPD point/hour for attending the session. A reflection sheet for chaplains to use before the session to help think about what they might have on their mind and after the session to record learning can be be downloaded from here.
It may be helpful to read through the participant's guide before a session, and this framework provides some background to Mark Stobert’s understanding of the reflective practice paradigm.
